Raja-raja Jawa adalah dermawan seni yang terkenal, membiayai pembangunan beberapa bentuk seni seperti hiasan perak, wayang kulit (boneka kulit), dan orkestra gamelan. Boneka Wayang sering dibina dari kulit kambing yang telah dipotong dan dicat untuk memberikan penampilan pakaian pada boneka. Boneka sering dijual kepada wanita yang bersemangat yang menggunakan boneka sebagai reka bentuk untuk batik mereka. Untuk menghasilkan semula Reka bentuk rumit pada kain, mereka akan meletupkan arang melalui lubang yang menentukan corak Pakaian pada boneka.
